Orthopaedic operations (e.g. hip and knee replacements, back surgery, etc)
Hydrotherapy is commonly used to increase the rate of recovery following surgery, by increasing range of movement and muscle strength. It can also be beneficial to start hydrotherapy (or other exercise therapy) prior to the operation to maximise the strength in the surrounding muscles optimising your rate of recovery.

Arthritis and rheumatoid conditions
Many people who suffer from osteo-arthritis (wear and tear), rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, polymyalgia rheumatica and other rheumatology conditions, benefit from hydrotherapy.

Combinations of neck, shoulder, back, hip or knee pain
Many people suffer from combinations of back, neck, shoulder, hip and knee pain. It is often more beneficial to treat ‘whole body’ or combinations of aches and pains in the hydrotherapy pool rather than with land based physiotherapy.

Following fractures and broken bones
This can be useful if people are struggling to start walking again following a broken leg, pelvis, or back. The buoyancy of the water helps to alleviate the body weight through the affected area and encourages pain free return to movement.

Chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue/ ME
These conditions are often complicated and difficult to treat, hydrotherapy can be a very successful method of introducing a graded exercise programme.

Neurological conditions
Hydrotherapy can be beneficial to some neurological conditions, for example: head injuries, paraplegia, ataxia, cerebral palsy, and sometimes MS, strokes etc. However, it is especially pertinent with neurological conditions that a thorough assessment is made to see if hydrotherapy is appropriate for each individual. If hydrotherapy is considered appropriate, it is important that if the patient is not able to transfer and dress independently that a partner or carer is willing to help.

Learning difficulties
We have many clients who use the pool who suffer from learning difficulties, often in association with physical difficulties, e.g cerebral palsy. Commonly we are able to instruct family or carers how to use the hydrotherapy pool to its best advantage. It is important that the family or carers are happy to come into the pool.

Fitness
Following recovery from injury, many people find the hydrotherapy pool an ideal environment to start an individual exercise programme.
