What is Pilates?

Pilates is a unique exercise system developed over 70 years ago by Joseph H Pilates, a professional athlete and boxer. He developed his training methods to help rehabilitate hospital patients unable to leave their beds. He worked extensively within the dance community in New York, working with dancers with injuries. It was this work that linked the Pilates method to improving the way people move.

What is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is a progression of the Pilates method. It combines current clinical research and techniques into the management of movement dysfunction specifically addressing back and neck pain, with traditional Pilates exercises. An individual specific exercise programme can be prescribed for a client, depending on the findings of their assessment. Clients can be referred for Clinical Pilates as part of their rehabilitation. This can be done in the form of one-on-one sessions or in a class setting.

Who recommends Clinical Pilates?

The benefits of Clinical Pilates are recommended by many Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, GPs and Spinal Surgeons. Olympic athletes, Royal Ballet Dancers and Professional Rugby players have all shown improved performance by incorporating Pilates into their training.

How does Clinical Pilates work?

Clinical Pilates combines breathing with fluid, precise movement. The exercises are gentle, but precise so they can be customised to individual needs. The main principle of Pilates is to achieve relaxed control, to use the body in the most economical way. This may involve strengthening and toning weak muscles while relaxing those areas constantly held in tension. Pilates provides the skills to optimise posture and enhance movement.

How will it help me?

Pilates helps prevent: Sports Injuries, Spinal pain, Shoulder problems and aching knees. Clinical Pilates is used as a key part of rehabilitation following neck and shoulder pain and low back pain.

How do I start?
