Ruth qualified with a BSc in physiotherapy in 1994. Whilst completing the challenging junior rotations at Southampton University Teaching Hospitals she developed special interest in Respiratory Physiotherapy.
She joined the Respiratory Centre Team now based at Queen Alexander Hospital in 1996, working closely alongside the Respiratory Consultants and specialist respiratory nurses. In addition she runs a private clinic at The Physiotherapy Centre and she is also available for home visits for those patients finding it difficult to leave the house.
Ruth leads the pulmonary rehabilitation programme which helps to reduce breathlessness and improve quality of life in people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (emphysema). In addition she also runs outpatient respiratory physiotherapy clinics specialising in aiding and advising on sputum clearance techniques in people with a plethora of lung conditions such as bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis.
Ruth's particular area of special interest is in the treatment of hyperventilation syndrome and disordered breathing patterns resulting from conditions such as asthma. She has developed advanced skills in acupuncture for the treatment of these conditions.
Ruth is an active member of the British Thoracic Society, The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Respiratory Care, The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Cystic Fibrosis and Physiotherapy for Hyperventilation Organisation.
