A Non-Invasive Treatment That Reaches Deeper Than Conventional Therapies
Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy (EMTT) represents a significant leap forward in non-invasive medical technology. While standard treatments often focus on surface symptoms, EMTT uses high-energy magnetic fields to stimulate cellular repair processes deep within damaged tissues.
At The Physiotherapy Centre, we are proud to be one of the few clinics in the Hampshire area to offer this cutting-edge treatment. We use the MagneLith system—the gold standard in EMTT—to help patients from Waterlooville, Cosham, Havant, and Petersfield who are dealing with persistent pain that hasn’t fully responded to conventional therapies.
Conditions We Treat
EMTT is used to treat a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
Low Back Pain
EMTT can reduce pain and improve function in chronic low back pain, particularly where muscular and joint components are contributing. It is often combined with manual therapy and exercise.
Sciatica
For nerve-related leg pain originating from the lumbar spine, EMTT can help reduce inflammation and pain around irritated nerve roots.
Post-Surgical Recovery
Following joint replacements, arthroscopies, and other orthopaedic procedures, EMTT can support tissue healing and reduce post-operative pain and swelling.
Tendon, Muscle, and Joint Pain
Including plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, Achilles problems, and other persistent soft tissue conditions. EMTT stimulates cellular repair at a deeper level than surface-based treatments.
Joint Pain and Swelling (Osteoarthritis)
EMTT has shown promising results for reducing pain and inflammation in osteoarthritic joints, particularly the knee, hip, and hand.
Shoulder Problems
Including rotator cuff injuries, frozen shoulder, and calcific tendinopathy. The deep penetration of EMTT makes it particularly useful for shoulder conditions where the affected structures sit beneath layers of muscle.
Women’s Health (Endometriosis)
EMTT is used within our women’s health service to help manage pelvic pain associated with endometriosis.
Men’s Health (Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome)
EMTT is used alongside pelvic floor rehabilitation and shockwave therapy within our men’s health service for chronic pelvic pain.
Fracture Healing
When combined with focused shockwave therapy, EMTT can stimulate bone healing in delayed union and non-union fractures.
How We Treat: Our Approach
Clinical Assessment First
We never apply EMTT in isolation. Your journey begins with a thorough clinical assessment to confirm your diagnosis. We use EMTT strategically—often introducing it when your progress has plateaued or when your injury involves deep structures (such as bone marrow or hip joints) that manual therapy cannot reach. It is a targeted tool used to unstick the healing process.
How the Treatment Works
The EMTT device generates a high-energy oscillating magnetic field. At a cellular level, this field acts as a catalyst, stimulating the production of anti-inflammatory mediators and promoting rapid cell regeneration.
What happens during your session:
- Non-Invasive: You remain fully clothed throughout the procedure.
- No Skin Contact: The applicator is held over the treatment area without needing to touch your skin.
- The Sensation: A typical session lasts between 10 and 20 minutes. You will feel a gentle pulsing or vibrating sensation, but there is no pain.
- Immediate Effects: Most patients find the treatment very relaxing, and some even report a noticeable reduction in stiffness or pain immediately after the first session.
Combined Treatment Protocols
Research and our own clinical experience show that EMTT is most effective when “layered” with other therapies. We don’t just use it to mask pain; we use it to accelerate your recovery. Common combined protocols include:
- EMTT + Focused Shockwave: The "Gold Standard" for bone healing, stress fractures, and deep-seated tendon conditions.
- EMTT + Manual Therapy: Used for complex spinal and joint conditions to reduce inflammation before hands-on mobilisation.
- EMTT + Post-Surgical Rehab: To help manage pain and swelling in the early stages of recovery, allowing you to move onto your exercises sooner
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Your initial session at The Physiotherapy Centre lasts 60 minutes. This ensures we have enough time for a comprehensive clinical assessment to verify that EMTT is the most effective tool for your specific condition. If appropriate, we will perform your first treatment session during the same visit.
A few practicalities for your visit:
- What to wear: Please wear comfortable, everyday clothing. One of the unique benefits of EMTT is that you do not need to undress—the high-energy magnetic field penetrates through clothing without any loss of effectiveness.
- What to bring: If you have any relevant scan results (MRI, X-ray), surgical reports, or records of previous treatments, please bring them along. This helps us map the treatment area with greater precision.
- Safety First: Because EMTT uses powerful magnetic fields, it is not suitable for patients with pacemakers or those who are pregnant. We will conduct a thorough safety screening before we begin.
Post-Treatment: No Downtime
There is no “recovery period” required after an EMTT session. You can return to your normal daily activities, including work and driving, immediately after leaving the clinic.
While the treatment itself is effortless, it is usually just one part of your recovery journey. Your clinician will advise you on any specific exercise or activity modifications you should follow between sessions to ensure the biological changes triggered by the EMTT are fully supported by your physical rehabilitation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between EMTT and shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy uses acoustic pressure waves that are most effective on tendons and superficial structures. EMTT uses high-energy magnetic fields that penetrate the entire tissue volume, reaching deeper structures including joints, bones, and muscles. The two treatments work through different mechanisms and are often combined for enhanced results.
Is EMTT painful?
No. Most patients describe a comfortable pulsing or vibrating sensation during treatment. There is no pain and no recovery time needed afterwards.
How many EMTT sessions will I need?
This depends on your condition. Most treatment plans involve four to eight sessions, often combined with manual therapy or shockwave. Your clinician will outline the recommended course at your initial assessment.
Is there any scientific evidence for EMTT?
Yes. EMTT is supported by a growing body of peer-reviewed research, particularly for musculoskeletal pain, tendinopathies, and bone healing. It is a newer technology than shockwave, so the evidence base is still developing, but early results are encouraging. Your clinician can discuss the relevant evidence for your specific condition.
Can EMTT help after surgery?
Yes. EMTT can support post-surgical healing by reducing inflammation, promoting tissue repair, and managing pain. It is commonly used following joint replacements, arthroscopies, and tendon repairs as part of a structured rehabilitation programme.
Do I need to undress for EMTT?
No. The magnetic field penetrates through clothing, so you can remain fully dressed during treatment. Wear comfortable clothing—there is no need to bring anything specific.
Can EMTT be used alongside other treatments?
Yes—that is how it works best. EMTT is typically combined with manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, or shockwave therapy. It is not designed to replace these treatments but to enhance their effectiveness.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are rare and generally mild. Some patients report a temporary increase in symptoms for 24 to 48 hours after the first session, which settles on its own. There are no serious reported side effects.
Who should not have EMTT?
EMTT is not suitable for patients with cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implants, or other implanted electronic devices, as the magnetic field can interfere with their function. It is also not recommended during pregnancy. Your clinician will screen for contraindications before treatment.
Can I claim EMTT on my health insurance?
EMTT is a relatively new treatment and is not covered by all insurance policies. Contact your insurer to check whether it is included under your plan. If not, the EMTT-only follow-up sessions are competitively priced at £37.
