Structured, Progressive Rehab Programmes for Complex Recovery
Some conditions need more than just a few sessions of manual therapy to resolve. Following major surgery, a serious injury, or a complex diagnosis, your body requires a structured rehabilitation programme that is progressed systematically over weeks or months. True recovery requires more than just ‘getting better’; it requires objective testing, clear milestones, and the right technology to ensure you are fit for the demands of your life.
At The Physiotherapy Centre, we offer specialist rehabilitation programmes that go far beyond standard physiotherapy. We bridge the gap between early-stage recovery and a full return to function. Whether you are a professional athlete, a weekend warrior, or someone recovering from a life-altering surgery, our team designs intensive, structured programmes tailored to your specific end goal.
Patients from Waterlooville and across Hampshire are frequently referred to us by leading consultants and surgeons who trust our evidence-based approach to post-operative and complex injury care.
Conditions We Rehabilitate
Post-Operative & Orthopaedic Recovery
Joint Replacements
Hip, knee, and shoulder replacements require more than just movement; they require a rebuild. We follow evidence-based protocols to restore your range of motion and strength, adapting the pace to your individual surgical journey.
Orthopaedic Surgery
Specialist rehab for post-arthroscopy (knee, shoulder, hip), tendon repairs, and ligament reconstructions (such as ACL or PCL). We work closely with your surgeon’s guidelines to ensure your recovery is safe and systematic.
Fractures
Healing a bone is only the first step. We focus on restoring the mobility and muscle mass lost during immobilisation. For complex cases like non-union or delayed union, we can integrate Shockwave and EMTT to stimulate bone healing at a cellular level.
Tendon, Muscle & Sports Injuries
Tendon and Muscle Problems
Major injuries like Achilles ruptures or rotator cuff repairs require a “loading” programme. We use objective testing to ensure your tissue is strong enough before progressing you to the next stage of rehab.
Sports Injuries
For recurrent or complex injuries, we provide a full return-to-sport programme. This includes movement analysis, strength and conditioning, and sport-specific drills to ensure you don’t just return to play, but stay there.
Chronic & Complex MSK Conditions
Persistent MSK Conditions
For chronic back pain, osteoarthritis, or frozen shoulder, we move beyond short-term relief. Our programmes focus on building long-term physical capacity and giving you the tools for self-management.
Spinal Injuries
Whether you are recovering from spinal surgery, a disc-related problem, or a spinal cord injury, our treatment is tailored to the specific level of injury and your personal independence goals.
Specialist Integrated Care
Neurological Conditions
In coordination with our specialist neuro physiotherapist, we provide structured programmes for stroke recovery, MS, and traumatic brain injuries, focusing on neuroplasticity and functional independence.
Respiratory Conditions
We offer pulmonary rehabilitation for asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis. These programmes integrate tailored exercise with specialist respiratory techniques to improve your cardiovascular fitness and breathing efficiency.
How We Rehabilitate: Our Approach
The Advanced Rehabilitation Framework
A structured rehabilitation programme is a data-driven journey from injury back to full performance. We use a four-pillar approach to ensure your recovery is safe, objective, and permanent.
Comprehensive Baseline Assessment
Every programme begins with a deep dive into your current physical function. We don’t rely on guesswork; we use standardised outcome measures, precision strength testing, and range-of-motion assessments. Where appropriate, we use Force Plate Analysis to see exactly how you are distributing weight and generating power. These baseline measurements are the foundation of your recovery, allowing us to track every percentage of improvement.
Individually Programmed Rehabilitation
Your programme is written specifically for you and evolved at every session. This is not a generic exercise class; it is a clinical prescription. Where appropriate, your rehab is gym-based, utilizing equipment that allows for precise loading. Every set, repetition, and kilogram of resistance is calculated based on your stage of recovery and your specific end goals.
Advanced Rehabilitation Tools
To bridge the gap between injury and peak performance, we utilize the same technologies used by professional sports teams:
- Force Plate Testing: To measure weight-bearing symmetry, balance, and jump performance with millisecond precision.
- Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training: This allows you to build significant muscle strength using very light loads. It is a game-changer for post-surgical patients who need to regain muscle mass but cannot yet put heavy stress through a healing joint or tendon.
- Integrated ESWT & EMTT: We can combine your movement programme with Shockwave Therapy and EMTT to support tissue healing at a cellular level simultaneously.
Clear Milestones & Return-to-Activity Testing
We believe you should always know where you stand. Your rehabilitation is structured around clear, objective milestones. You will know exactly what criteria you need to meet before moving to the next phase—whether that’s walking without a limp, starting to jog, or returning to competitive play. For athletes, our Return-to-Sport testing ensures you hit specific performance markers before discharge, significantly reducing the risk of re-injury.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Because of the depth of testing required, your initial assessment lasts 60 minutes. This is where we gather the data that forms the foundation of your recovery.
Preparing for your assessment:
- What to wear: Please wear gym-appropriate clothing and trainers. We need to see how you move, and you will likely be performing some functional tests or using the gym equipment.
- Documentation: Bring any surgical reports, consultant letters, or imaging results (MRI, X-ray, Ultrasound) you have. The more information we have about the "internal" repair, the better we can plan the "external" rehabilitation.
- The Result: By the end of this session, your clinician will explain the findings in detail, outline a phased rehabilitation plan, and discuss the likely timeframe and session frequency required to reach your goals.
Session Structure and Frequency
Rehabilitation is not “one size fits all.” The length and frequency of your appointments will evolve as you get stronger:
- Session Length: Depending on your specific programme and the complexity of the exercises, sessions may be 30, 45, or 60 minutes.
- Frequency: Typically, patients attend between one and three times per week. In the early stages of post-operative recovery, you may need more frequent input to manage swelling and range of motion; as you move into the strengthening phase, sessions may be spaced out to allow for muscle recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is specialist rehabilitation different from regular physiotherapy?
Standard physiotherapy typically involves assessment, hands-on treatment, and a home exercise programme. Specialist rehabilitation is more intensive, structured, and data-driven. It involves supervised gym-based sessions, objective testing, advanced tools like force plates and blood flow restriction training, and a phased programme with clear milestones. It is designed for patients who need more than a standard physiotherapy approach.
When should I start rehabilitation after surgery?
This depends on your surgery. For most joint replacements, rehabilitation begins within the first week. For ligament reconstructions and tendon repairs, the timing is guided by your surgeon’s protocol. Contact us before your surgery and we can plan your rehabilitation in advance so that it starts at the right time.
What is blood flow restriction (BFR) training?
BFR involves applying a specialised cuff to the limb during exercise, which partially restricts blood flow to the working muscles. This allows you to achieve a significant strengthening stimulus at much lower loads than would normally be required. It is particularly useful in early post-surgical rehabilitation when heavy loading is not yet safe.
What is force plate testing?
A force plate is a platform that measures the forces your body produces during standing, squatting, jumping, or landing. It provides objective data on weight-bearing symmetry, power output, and balance — giving your clinician precise information to guide your rehabilitation and determine when you are ready to progress.
How long does a rehabilitation programme take?
This varies considerably. A post-knee-replacement programme might run for 12 to 16 weeks. ACL reconstruction rehabilitation typically takes nine to twelve months. Chronic conditions may benefit from a longer-term programme. Your clinician will discuss realistic timescales at your initial assessment.
Can I do my rehabilitation exercises at home between sessions?
Yes, and you will be expected to. Your clinician will prescribe a home programme that complements your clinic-based sessions. Consistent home exercise is essential for making the most of your rehabilitation.
Do I need a referral from my surgeon?
No. You can self-refer directly. However, if your surgeon has a specific post-operative protocol, it is helpful to bring this to your first appointment so your rehabilitation can follow their guidance.
Will my rehabilitation be supervised throughout?
Yes. All clinic-based rehabilitation sessions are one-to-one with your clinician. They will supervise your exercises, adjust loads and progressions, and provide hands-on treatment as needed. You are not left to exercise alone in a gym.
Can specialist rehabilitation help if my recovery has stalled?
Yes — this is a common reason for referral. If you have reached a plateau with standard physiotherapy, a more structured, data-driven approach can often break through the stall. Force plate testing and advanced loading techniques can identify deficits that were not previously addressed.
Can I claim rehabilitation on my health insurance?
Yes. We are recognised by Bupa, AXA PPP, Aviva, WPA, and Cigna. Contact your insurer to confirm that rehabilitation physiotherapy is covered under your policy and obtain an authorisation number.
